On Culture.听鈥淐ulture鈥 is where all three major branches of knowledge/university departments (natural sciences, social sciences and humanities) may intersect, as the term鈥檚 connotation expands. For example, the faculty may engage in the following research projects: 鈥淎 Cultural History of Science Research in the University,鈥 鈥淓thnography of a Cultural Event: A Grounded Theory Approach,鈥 and 鈥淭he Political Economy of an Art Form.鈥 鈥淐ulture鈥 allows for the convergences of disciplines. 鈥淐ulture鈥 is grounded in both the humanities and the social sciences and the potential collaborations that may be engaged through the said boulders of disciplines may help propel interdisciplinarity, multidisciplinary and pandisciplinarity in the university.
On the Arts.听Inseparable from the humanities are the arts, which include literature, music, fine arts, media arts, digital arts and architecture. Broadly, it may refer to the 鈥渓iberal arts,鈥 which is the philosophical basis of the humane letters. It its contemporary sense, it also refers to the applied arts of painting, sculpture, music, film, broadcast, architecture, digital, popular art, folk art and other emergent art forms and modes.
On the Humanities.听The humanistic research paradigm may be interpreted as the counterpoint of the empirical research. Firstly, humanistic research investigates the human sciences in their various connotations: the arts, culture and philosophy. Secondly, in an age of posthumanism and postmodernism, it may be beneficial to reassert the value of the human being through the following disciplines: philosophy, languages, linguistics, literature, media arts, art studies, religion and history. The humanities 鈥 both as epistemological bases and as a cluster of research paradigms 鈥 should be able to enliven both theoretical and applied researches in the university. Thirdly, the phenomenological and hermeneutical paradigms of qualitative research methods draw inspiration from the humanistic disciplines.
The aim of the research center is to set the agenda, to manage and to evaluate researches in the humanities. It also serves the purpose of assisting the institution in its bid to reach the status of a research university; the humanities being the other half of the flagship group of disciplines that constitutes a modern institution of higher learning. Moreover, it should enrich instruction, embolden extension services, and chart the professional careers of faculty members as they position themselves at the forefront of knowledge production. Because the humanities are deeply connected to the written word and other expressions of language, the research publication and other discourse-related events of the university may be further energized by this move of establishing a nexus for research. As a classical university, UST adheres to the formation of the human being steeped in Catholic and Thomistic value of faith through reason. This requires grounding in philosophy, literature, religion and the arts. Said core value should find application in the research efforts of the faculties in the various disciplines engaged in humanistic education.
The mission of RCCAH is to produce new knowledge in Filipino culture, arts and humanities by providing venue to emergent research that locates our nation鈥檚 identity and consciousness in a transnational imaginary and within a burgeoning technology-propelled public sphere.
RCCAH envisions itself to working dynamically towards contributing to UST鈥檚 efforts to becoming a research university. It addresses local and global concerns for cultural diversity, cultural difference, gender difference, inclusive growth, multiple literacies and changing mindscapes that converge with cyber-technological systems and the contemporary climate for life-processes and thought-formations that they inhabit and/or construct.
